8 tips for Coping with the Depression Stages of Grief

1. Give yourself permission to “feel you feelings”.

2. Don’t try to suppress your grief . Acknowledge your pain.

3. Express your feeling to others, (i.e. friends, family, clergy, therapists, Peer Support)

4. Express your feelings in creative ways (i.e. physical activity , journaling, painting, wood working, swimming, sports, self care)

5. Avoid negative behavior that can harm you and your health or relationships. (i.e. alcohol abuse, drugs, etc, you know what we are talking about right?)

6. Set regular exercise goals each day. Get your endorphins flowing and you frustrations out.

7. Plan ahead for “grief triggers”, locations, circumstances, holidays, anniversaries or birthdays) Ask your family and friends for extra support, Contact Peer Support. Make an appointment with a Culturally Competent Clinician to assist.

8. See a Medical Doctor if the pain associated with the loss is so constant & severe that it keeps you from resuming your life or if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts.
